Step 1: Log in to your QuickBooks account
Step 2: Select “Chart of Accounts”
Step 3: Next, select “File”
Step 4: Then, select “Close Company”
Step 5: Here, hit on the dropdown and click “Edit”
Step 6: Now, choose the file that you no longer needed
Step 7: Lastly, press “OK”
How do you delete a Company File in QuickBooks Desktop?
The process to delete a company file in QuickBooks Desktop is as follows:
- Click “Start” on your computer and search for the company file you wish to erase. The files here would have extensions like .qbw for working files, .qbb for backup files, .qba for accountants copy files, .qbx for accountant transfer files, and .qby for accountants change files. (Just for your information, the default location for all company files on a desktop is C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files. Also, it is always better to create a backup of the company file you plan on deleting so you could have access to it later if you want to. )
- Once you have the required file, click “View” from the menu and then click “Options”
- Now, hit on “Change Folder” and Search
- Once you are here, click “View” and untick the box that says “Hide extension for known files”
- Click “Apply” and then “OK”
- Once you see the file extensions, you need to look for the file you wish to delete
- To remove or hide the specific files, go to “File” and click “Close company option”.
- Next, tap the “Edit list” button, check the box against the file you wish to delete

- First of all, ensure that you have the correct file you wish to delete
- Open QuickBooks online and click the “Gear” icon on the top right corner of the screen

- Next, look for subscription status and click “Cancel” against the subscription status
- At this point, you will be prompted with an option to either cancel or change the plan. Click “Continue” if you wish to delete the company file

If your account was set up less than 60 days ago, follow the below-mentioned steps for purging the data for the company file –
- Open “QuickBooks Online” and log in using your credentials
- Now, you will be able to see the list of files that you wish to delete
- Once everything is deleted, click “Yes”
- After that, click “Wipe Data”
- Finally, you will be rerouted to the homepage after the deletion is completed
